The fun continued on the second day! Gosh we pretty much hit the floor running! Classes started promptly at 11 a.m. and we kept going nonstop until 2:00 p.m.
We had left everything ready to go. If you recall, we had even used the warping boards the day before to set up our yarn for self striping. So on day two the first task was to soak our yarn skeins so that they could readily absorb the dye. We needed the fiber to open up and blossom so the color could penetrate:)
We let the fibers soak up the water for a while and moved over to where Scout was demonstrating how to mix colors and apply them to your yarn.
First there was color:)
Then you lay out your yarn and section it off --areas where you want your color to go:

Then you dig right in!
Scout is demonstrating here how she dyes her Orchids Colorway. Thanks for Sharing Scout!
You have to make sure you leave some sections between the colors in case of bleeding. Plus this colorway does carrry a little bit of white.
Once you are done applying the color to the first side, you carefully flip your yarn over and do the other side making sure it is fully saturated.
Then, You carefully take that reynolds wrap and wrap your yarn up like a burrito:)
It is now ready to be placed in a bowl of water and nuked for 15 minutes!
Then it was our turn to play! After soaking our yarn we squeezed out as much water as possible, chose the colors that we wanted to use and went at it:)
Here is Nell dabbing in that pretty misty gray color:) to her self striping skein
And here is Nell applying some awesome colors to one of those blank sock flats from KnitPicks:
Here is Racquel Prepping her yarn:
And here is mine ready for the self-striping version of Orchids!
I had warped the yarn with a 4x, 2x, 6x, repeat. the section being wrapped there is the white section that will not require any dye. The section on the right ended up with two colors Orchidsa and Avocado. I added the colors in such a way that they will add a little Fair Isle look. I really hope it works out! Lastly, the Leftmost section here and the largest amount of yarn I dyed in Orchids.
Sadly I forgot to snap a photo of it before I threw inthe micro:( However, here is shot of my 3 skeins as they were drying.
L to R: Gems sock yarn hanpainted in Light blue and brown. I really was going for Scout's SnowBunny colorway-- although the brown is not quite right... The Middle Skein is my self striping Orchids. Let see how it self stripes:) and the third well that is my monster skein that I dyed up as an extra --utilizing everyones left over blue dye. If it was blue or blue green, or in the blue color family I threw it on:) This is the end result. Funny thing is that folks were actually scared of this one:0 I was getting "Mad Scientist" looks from the group:) Not so bad considering there was really no thought process involved he he....
Now here are a couple of pictures of the lovely skeins the rest of the gang dyed:
And now... Drum Roll please.... The Finished Product:)
Blue Sea Monster, My version of Snow Bunny -or is that Calico?, and Self Striping Orchids:)
Calico or Snow Bunny? What do you think?
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the way this Orchid turned out! I really do hope it knits up nicely:)
Scout I want to thank you for coming out here, taking your show on the road and teaching us how to do what you do! You are the best and I feel truly lucky and honored to have taken your class and of course met you in person!
Now if you really want to see all of day Two then go here. For the Full Flickr set Days 1 & II then go here.
Lastly, I would like to thank Stephen and Wonder Mike from YKnit. These guys were awesome! They were there the two days and personally assisted scout and all of us with our dyeing needs! They were truly Boy Scouts ---Scout's Boys! If you don't believe me check out this pic of Wonder Mike standing ready for Scout's next command:)

Wow, that's a fun wkshop! Amazing how close your colorway came to the BMFA skein. Hee-hee, in your 15th pic it looks like Scout is karate chopping the yarn.

I appreciate hand dyed yarn. It is so wonderful, but I am such a slow knitter that I buy it very infrequently. Your blog puts mine to shame, Marisol! Looks like you had great fun!
